Language: grammar and vocabulary

One and many

Write the plural of a naming word.

One cat, two cats. When there is more than one, the naming word itself changes.

The rule

Most words just add -s. Words ending in s, x, ch or sh add -es instead, because -s alone would be hard to say. A word ending in y after a consonant swaps the y for -ies: baby, babies. And a few words trade their f for a v: leaf, leaves.

Worked example

One brush, two ___

  1. Look at the last letters: s and h.

That is the sh ending, one of the four that take -es.

Try it together

Let's make three words mean more than one.

    1.One dog, two ___

    Have a go

Have a go. One dish, two ___
