Beginning sounds
Hear the first sound in a word and match it to its letter.
Say a word out loud and listen to the very first bit of it. That is its beginning sound.
Say it slowly
j-j-jam begins with j. r-r-rug begins with r. Stretch the first sound and you will hear it.
Worked example
Say the word kite out loud.
The first sound is k.
Your tongue makes it before anything else.
