Geometry – properties of shapes

Solid shapes around us

Name a cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder and cone, and spot them in real things.

A flat shape is drawn on paper. A solid shape is one you can pick up, like a ball or a box.

Worked example

Why does a ball roll but a box does not?

  1. A ball is a sphere. Its whole surface is curved, with no flat face anywhere.

A curved surface is what rolls — there is nothing flat for it to sit still on.

Try it together

Let's count the parts of a cube together.

1.A cube is shaped like a dice. How many flat faces does it have?

    Remember

A face is a flat side. A corner is where edges meet in a point.
