Work out how long something lasts, including when it runs past the hour, and find a start or finish time from a duration.

Perimeter: once round the outside
Find the perimeter of any straight-sided shape by adding the lengths of its sides, and work backwards to a missing side.
Before you start
An L-shaped garden, with every side drawn as its own strip. Find all of them, and count how many there are.

Six sides, not four — the step in the middle adds two more, and leaving one of those out is the commonest way a perimeter goes wrong.

Area by counting squares
Measure the area of a shape on squared paper by counting the squares it covers, including half squares.
Before you start
Three shapes sit on the same grid of squares. Count the squares under each one and compare what you find with how big each shape looks.

Shapes and symmetry
Count the sides and corners of a shape, name the parts of a solid, find a line of symmetry, and cover a shape with smaller shapes.
Before you start
Here is a box drawn as a solid. Find a face, an edge and a corner on it.

A corner is the one place where three edges come together at a point.
Take a tile from the tray and lay it on the hexagon. Cover the whole hexagon with one kind of tile, then clear it and try another kind.
