Number – multiplication and division
6 times table
Recall the six times table up to 6 × 12.
The six times table is really just counting in sixes. Every time you add another six, you move one more step along the table: 6, 12, 18, 24 and on it goes.
A shortcut worth knowing
Six is double three. So if you already know the three times table, you can double it. 3 × 7 = 21, so 6 × 7 = 42.
Worked example
What is 6 × 3?
Count on in sixes, three times: 6, 12, 18.
Three sixes means three jumps of six from zero.
Try it together
Now let us work out 6 × 9 together.
Nine sixes is a long way to count, so we will use a trick: go one step too far, then come back.
1.Ten sixes is much easier than nine. What is 10 × 6?
Have a go
Your turn — what is 6 × 4?
Hint: Count in sixes four times, or double 3 × 4.
