Making and breaking tens
Swap ten ones for one ten, and break one ten back into ten ones.
Before you start
Thirty ones in a row, with a number written at every fifth mark. Move along the line and see where the tens fall.
Counting on ten ones lands you exactly on the next ten. That is what swapping ten ones for one ten does — the same place on the line, reached a shorter way.

Adding within 100
Add two two-digit numbers.
Before you start
Walk along the line and watch the tens go past. Every number with a label under it is ten more than the one before.
Adding 46 + 18 is two walks along this line: ten more carries you from 46 to 56, and eight more steps lands you on 64. That is the same as putting the tens together and then the ones.
