Measurement

Money and change

Add up prices and work out the change from the money you hand over.

Money is added and taken away just like any other number. The change is whatever is left when the price is taken from what you handed over.

Change is a subtraction

Take the price away from the money you paid with. Pay ₹50 for something costing ₹35 and the change is ₹15.

Worked example

A book costs ₹45 and you pay ₹50. What is the change?

  1. Take the price from what you paid: 50 - 45.

The change is always the part of your money that is left over.

Try it together

Let us buy two things and work out the change.

A pen costs ₹18 and a notebook costs ₹12. You pay with ₹50.

1.Find the total price first. What is 18 + 12?

    Have a go

Have a go on your own: a toy costs ₹65 and you pay ₹100. What is the change? Give just the number.

Hint: Take the price away from the money you paid with.
