Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Taking away within 10

Take a small number away from 10 or less.

Taking away means starting with some things and losing a few of them. Whatever is still there at the end is the answer.

Worked example

What is 7 - 3?

  1. Hold up 7 fingers.

That is the number you are starting from.

Have a play

Have a wander along the line. See how far each number sits from zero.

Tap anywhere on the line.

Try it together

Let us work out 9 - 3 in two little hops.

1.Start at 9 and jump back 1. Where do you land?

    Remember

Taking a number away from itself always leaves zero. 6 - 6 is zero, and so is 9 - 9.

    Have a go

    Have a go on your own: 10 - 4
