Measurement and Data

Money

Add up what things cost and work out the change.

Money is counted the same way as anything else. Notes and coins have numbers on them, and you add those numbers up.

Worked example

A pencil costs $8 and a ruler costs $4. What do they cost together?

  1. Add the two numbers: 8 + 4.

Buying both means paying for both.

Try it together

Now some change, together.

You buy a book for $35 and hand over $50.

1.Count up from 35 to the next ten. How much is that?

    Remember

Change is what is left of your money after you have paid. Count up from the price to what you handed over.

    Have a go

Have a go. You pay $20 for a toy costing $14. What change do you get? Give just the number.
