Number and Operations in Base Ten
Subtracting within 100
Take one two-digit number away from another.
Taking away a big number is easier in two goes. Split both numbers into tens and ones, deal with each separately, then put the answer back together.
Worked example
What is 47 − 13?
Split them up. 47 is 40 and 7. 13 is 10 and 3.
Every two-digit number is just some tens and some ones.
Try it together
Your turn: 62 − 27
1.The ones come first here. You cannot take 7 from 2, so break one ten open. What is 12 − 7?
Watch out
When the ones are too small to take from, break a ten open first. 62 is 6 tens and 2 ones, and it is also 5 tens and 12 ones.
Have a go
Have a go on your own: 54 − 26
Hint: Break a ten, then start with 14 − 6.
