Nets of solids
Say which solid a net folds into, and which flat shapes a solid's net is made from.
A net is a solid opened out flat. Cut a cardboard box along enough of its edges and it falls open into one flat piece — that piece is the box's net, and folding it back up gives you the box again.
The rule
Every face of the solid appears exactly once in its net, and nothing appears twice. So counting the flat shapes in a net tells you how many faces the finished solid has.
Have a play
Here is a cube opened out flat. Find out which face of the finished cube each flat square folds up to become.

Worked example
Which solid folds up from two circles and one rectangle?
Two circles means two flat faces of the same size.
Only a solid with two matching flat ends can use two identical circles.
Try it together
Let us work out what a net of one square and four triangles folds into.
Count the pieces first, then think about where each one has to go.
1.How many flat shapes are in this net altogether?
Have a go
Have a go on your own: how many squares does the net of a cube have?
