Adding and taking away within 20

Add and take away with numbers up to 20, going past ten on the way.

Ten is a friendly number to land on. To work out 8 + 5, fill the 8 up to ten first and then add whatever is left.

What is 8 + 5?

  1. 8 needs 2 more to reach ten.

    Ten is an easy place to count on from.

    Remember

    Going backwards works the same way. For 14 - 6, drop down to ten first and then take away the rest.
