Adding within 10

Add two small numbers with a total of 10 or less.

Adding is putting two amounts together and counting how many there are in all. You can start from the bigger number and count the smaller one on.

Worked example

What is 3 + 4?

  1. Hold up 3 fingers on one hand.

    That is the first number.

Try it together

Let us work out 6 + 3 by counting on.

    1.Start at 6 and count on 1. What number is that?

    Remember

    You may add two numbers in either order. 2 + 7 gives exactly the same answer as 7 + 2, so start with whichever is easier.
