Pronoun forms

Replace a noun with the right pronoun, and choose between forms such as I and me.

Read this: "Ravi fetched Ravi's bag because Ravi had left Ravi's book in Ravi's bag." Nothing is wrong with it except that it is unbearable. Pronouns are the short words that stand in for a noun so you do not have to keep saying it.

The doers

I, you, he, she, it, we, they. These do the action in a sentence. She painted the wall. They arrived late.

The receivers

me, you, him, her, it, us, them. These come after the verb or after a small word like to, for or with. The wall was painted by her. Give it to them.

The belonging ones

my, your, his, her, its, our, their. These sit in front of a noun to say whose it is. My bag, their house, its pages.

The I and me test

Not sure whether to write "Ravi and I" or "Ravi and me"? Take the other person out and read it again. "Me built a raft" sounds wrong, so it is "Ravi and I built a raft". "He thanked I" sounds wrong, so it is "He thanked Ravi and me".

Worked example

Replace the repeated nouns: "My cousins missed the bus, so my cousins walked, and the walk took my cousins an hour."

  1. Find the noun that keeps coming back: my cousins.

The first time is useful. It is every time after that which needs replacing.

Try it together

Let us replace three nouns with pronouns.

The sentence to fix is: "Meera's brother lost Meera's brother's keys, so my friends and I helped Meera's brother look." Each answer is one word.

1.The second mention is doing the losing. Write the pronoun that replaces it: ____ lost the keys.

    Have a go

The parcels are heavy. Please carry ____ inside.
