Am, is and are

Choose am, is or are to match who you are talking about.

Am, is and are are three forms of one little word. Which one you pick depends on who you are talking about.

The rule

Use 'am' with I — I am. For anyone else that is just one, use 'is'. Use 'are' with you, we, they, and when there is more than one.

Worked example

The dogs ___ loud.

  1. Count them. Dogs means more than one.

    The number is what chooses the word.
