This, that, these, those

Point at things with the right word for one or many, near or far.

We use pointing words to show which thing we mean. Two things decide the word: how many, and how far.

One thing

Near you: this. Far away: that.

More than one thing

Near you: these. Far away: those.

Worked example

You are holding one spoon. A window is across the room.

  1. You say: this spoon.

    One thing, near you.
